Stewardship

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What exactly is a pledge?
A: A pledge is a promise to support the church with a specific dollar amount. It allows us to budget, to plan our programming for the coming year. Sometimes one’s ability to give changes as the year goes along; in that case, please send a note to the church office.
Q: How do I know what amount to give?
A: According to the Bible, we are asked to give 10% of what we have to support others in need and the ministries and programs we believe in. The UCC asks members and friends to give 5% of income to the local church, knowing that many of us also support other charitable organizations. That is a goal to which many aspire. It is recommended that you start with an amount you know you can give, but one that is a bit of a stretch to you. Most people find they grow spiritually the more they give of talent, time and treasure.
Q: Who will know what amount I’m giving?
A: Pledges are kept strictly confidential.
Q: How does the church decide how to spend its money?
A: Budgeting is an open process. Boards submit budget requests, based on the ministry they have planned for the coming year. Church Council votes upon a budget to present to the entire congregation; all members may vote at the annual meeting in January.
Q: Anything new in the budget for 2012?
A: Aware of the economic climate, the budget increases are being kept to a minimum. The Personnel Committee is proposing to add 10 hours per week to the position of our Membership Coordinator, believing it is important for us to be adequately staffed as we continue to grow.
Q: What about the capital campaign?
A: The capital campaign, which will take place in 2012, is solely for the purpose of paying down our mortgage debt. This pledge drive is for the ministry and mission of the church in 2012. They are two separate campaigns.
